How Do Porcelain Veneers Work?
Porcelain veneers are made of a thin layer of porcelain material, and are custom made to the patient’s tooth size, shape and color. Within just three office visits, we can help you get the best fitting dental veneers for your teeth! The first visit will be a consultation. The second visit will be for making the custom veneers using an impression of your teeth, and the third visit will be the actual application of the veneers.Â
An impression of the teeth is made during your first visit and is sent to a dental laboratory. The veneers will come back within 2-4 weeks and will be able to be bonded onto each tooth individually. In preparation for your veneer application, it may be necessary to numb the area to remove the top layer of enamel on the teeth being treated. Our dentists will work diligently to trim the veneer to perfectly fit the top of your tooth before it is permanently cemented. Your tooth will then be cleaned, polished, and etched. A stronger bonding process can occur through etching, which roughens the tooth to seem more like your natural top layer.
It must be noted that dental veneers do come with certain risks:
- The process cannot be undone
- Veneers cannot be repaired if they chip or crack
- Though unlikely, veneers can dislodge and fall off. Therefore, it is important not to bite your nails, chew or bite hard objects, etc.
Recovery and Post Veneer Care
